Big Brother: When should he "butt" in??? How much say should the government have in our personal health issues? = Many people voice a wish for universal health care, saying that the government is there to take care of its people, and so it should, if in a more literal sense. But do we really want to hand our healthcare over to the federal government? What else would we be blithely handing over them in terms of control over our lives? This is not to say that it’s a fact that the government would misuse the control they could exercise over our health care, but there would definitely be a temptation to, both for those with good intentions and for those with bad. Now, when it comes to other forms of government involvement in people's personal health issues, such as in things like making certain immunizations mandatory, and payed for the by the government, or some smaller things, like laws that require seat belts. These are the types of laws that can make life a little safer for many, while not being very intrusive into people's private lives.
---However, even though these are ways in which people could benefit from government intervention in their personal health issues, there are s till a lot of problems that could arise from it too. For instance, if the government controlled drugs, and not just prescriptions drugs, but things like tobacco and the other, currently illegal, drugs. If the government just took the same course that many insurance companies take, they could limit or deny certain prescriptions to people for whom they are necessary. For those who smoke cigarettes, what would they do if they went into a store and tried to buy cigarettes, but were told they had already bought their given amount for the month? For some, the issue is whether or not surgery that we dont want can be forced upon us if our lives are in danger. This usually is only a problem when a person is seriously injured, unconscious, and there's no time to consult with them about whether they wish their life to be saved. However, what if its the case of a wasting sickness or debilitating injury, where it takes time for you to die? For some, the issue is whether or not surgery that we dont want can be forced upon us if our lives are in danger. This usually is only a problem when a person is seriously injured, unconscious, and there's no time to consult with them about whether they wish their life to be saved. However, what if its the case of a wasting sickness or debilitating injury, where it takes time for you to die? Or to take it up a level, what if the federal government finally started a universal health care program? Chances are good that any program the federal government starts that involves health care with have a good few corporate interest representatives involved. The only ones to gain anything from universal health care would be the corporations working towards their various interests, and the government from corporate pay offs to keep quiet.
---So, to put it simply, if the government got involved in its citizens personal health issues, it would be a disaster in the making for America. After all, once they got involved in our personal health issues, whats to keep them out of the rest of our lives? What would keep America from becoming the next Soviet Union, as it was under Stalin? If all it takes is a small part of our population complaining about how the government doesnt care for its citizens, and a little bit of corporate grease to get universal health care, is it really that incredible of an idea that the government could change from a democracy for the people to a dictatorship in which the interests of a few are all that matters? We believe that if you give the government too much slack in what they can do that involves your personal life, your taking a serious risk of losing any rights to privacy or control in general over your life. So, for those who read this seriously, think on it, and consider what benefits there are as compared to the serious problems that could crop up that are explained here.
